Pilmico Brings Sustainable Livelihood To Kalibo, Donates Piglets, Egg Machines And Bakery Kits
As part of its efforts to champion sustainable livelihood and backyard farming throughout the country, Pilmico – the food subsidiary of Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc. – recently donated livelihood kits to select beneficiaries in Kalibo, Aklan through its flagship CSR program, Mahalin Pagkaing Atin (MPA).
The lives of over 25 families and 2 cooperatives from Kalibo benefited from the livelihood assistance which consists of 30 piglets (2 piglets per beneficiary; each with one-cycle feed consumption), 10 egg machines (48-chicken set each with once-cycle feed consumption) and 2 bakery kits. The livelihood kits were turned over to pre-screened beneficiares last April 27 at Pilmico’s Mahalin Pagkaing Atin Food and Livelihood Expo held at the ABL Sports Complex and Cultural Center.
The event, which was attended by Mahalin Pagkaing Atin Ambassador, Chef Boy Logro, Erasto L. Panes Assistant Vice President – OIC, CARD Bank, Inc. – Visayas Operation and Dr. Bryan Taala, General Manager of Ta-ala Farm, officially kicked off the the Mahalin Pagkaing Atin caravan for 2016. It also introduced the newest addition to Pilmico’s porfolio of donations – bakery kits. The bakery starter package includes a 1-deck 4-tray bread oven, bread rack, working table, a delivery bike and 10 bags of flour.
The piglets, egg machines and bakery kits will enable local farmers to sustain their livelihoods through an easy-to-manage business with a quick return on investment, despite the threats of poverty, tragedy or conflict.
“Pilmico, as Aklan’s Partner for Growth, believes in uplifting the lives of our local farmers through these donations. We hope that these piglets, egg machines and bakery kits will serve as tools to enable local farmers to cultivate a sustainable livelihood in the years to come,” said Sabin M. Aboitiz, Pilmico President and Chief Executive Officer.
These donations are part of Pilmico’s Mahalin Pagkaing Atin program, a campaign introduced in mid-2014 that aims to promote sustainable entrepreneurship through promotion of local produce and instill a “pride of product, pride of place” mindset for both farmers and local consumers, thus enabling operators to maximize profit without passing through middlemen.
To date, the results of Mahalin Pagkaing Atin have been truly encouraging.
Nationwide, Pilmico has already donated a total of 826 piglets, 233 egg machines, 2 bakery starter packages as well as assisted 14 agri-posts where beneficiaries received feedbags as restart-up capital. In addition, 438 families nationwide are benefitting from the Mahalin Pagkaing Atin program at present.
In addition to the turnover of the livelihood kits, Pilmico also hosted several seminars on animal husbandry and nutrition, basic and advanced baking demos and cooking demos by Mahalin Pagkaing Atin Ambassador Chef Boy Logro where the different flavors of Kalibo were showcased using pork, chicken, & eggs.
